What does a CEFR level mean?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the international standard used to describe language ability on six levels, from complete beginner (A1) to full mastery (C2). Schools, universities and employers across Europe and beyond use it to compare language skills.

A1

Beginner

A2

Elementary

You can communicate in simple, routine tasks on familiar topics.

B1

Intermediate

You can deal with most situations while travelling and describe experiences, dreams, and opinions.

B2

Upper-Intermediate

You can interact with fluency and spontaneity, and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.

C1

Advanced

You can express ideas fluently and use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.

C2

Proficient / Mastery

You can understand virtually everything and express yourself precisely, even in complex situations.
