Advanced Cohesion and Linking

Move beyond "and" and "but" with linking devices that shape an argument.

25 min Challenging

Cohesion is what makes a text feel written rather than listed. C1 writers control it deliberately.

  • Contrast: whereas, nonetheless, albeit, that said
  • Cause: owing to, in view of, given that
  • Addition: moreover, what is more, not to mention
  • Result: consequently, hence, thereby

Fronting also links ideas: Rarely have we seen such demand. Only after the review was the policy changed.

One strong linker per paragraph is enough. Overloading connectors makes writing heavy and unnatural.
