Greetings and Introductions

The words and phrases you need to meet someone, say your name and start a friendly conversation.

10 min Easy

A first conversation in English usually follows a simple pattern: greet, introduce, ask back, close politely.

  • Hello! / Good morning! / Good evening!
  • My name is Sara. Nice to meet you.
  • And you? Where are you from?
  • See you tomorrow. Have a nice day!

Formal situations prefer Good morning and How do you do. With friends, Hi and How's it going are natural.

Native speakers answer "How are you?" briefly: Fine, thanks. And you? A long answer sounds unusual.
